PETER THORNTON

The Art of Calligraphy

Free to the Public
Friday, Jan. 6 at 7 p.m.
Cary Arts Center

Peter Thornton, a master calligrapher formerly of Lichfield, England, will present a slide show/lecture on the development of historic and contemporary Versal/Built-Up letters, along with examples of Gilding, the application of gold to calligraphic work. A special feature of the presentation will be several pieces he has created reflecting the words of songs, guaranteed to touch the hearts of anyone who loves music. These pieces beautifully display both built-up letterforms and gilding. A question and answer session will follow.

Peter, a full-time professional calligrapher since 1969, is a well-known teacher and the author of several books. He lives and teaches in the U.S. and has also taught in Canada, Japan, Hong Kong, South Africa and Europe. He is a Fellow of the Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society, based in London, England.

Come and enjoy this golden opportunity
for anyone who enjoys the beauty of calligraphy!

Two-Day Gilding Workshop and Master Class with Peter Thornton

Peter Thornton Weekend Informational and Registration Packet

Peter says: “We shall begin (on Saturday) with the simple form and construction of Versal (and the more modern “Built-Up) letters . . . and produce letters, words and possibly a small quotation…” in preparation for laying gold on them (on Sunday) using traditional bases and working with both paper and vellum, “…all done in an uncomplicated, workmanlike manner without the feeling of ‘ritual’ or preciousness.”
