COAST
Oct. 3-4. Map Your Space: Annie Cicale. Sponsored by the Carolina Lettering Arts Society. Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation, Supply, NC. (Near Wilmington)
With GPS and Google Maps, you might think map making skills are no longer needed, but a hand made map can be a treasure. In this workshop we will talk about the many kinds of maps, both geographical and other kinds, and then learn ways to make them. You’ll choose a topic, and then learn the cartographic techniques for making a camera-ready version of your space, or you can make a fine painterly version to hang on your wall, but you’ll find many ways to use them. Those Tolkien maps of Middle Earth can’t be found on your smart phone, and you too might want to design a map of your own imaginary space. We will review the letterforms you know, adapting them to various places on your maps, from simple place names to complicated titles. We’ll learn some of the cartographic traditions to make your map accessible and reliable for your audience, whether it is just a map to your house from the airport, a map to the wedding reception or a fantastic place you made up yourself. The emphasis in this class will be on learning the skills needed to make a map, but with a bit of fun thrown in as well. Contact Liz Simmonds <simmondselizabeth@gmail.com> for details, and to register.

MOUNTAINS
December 6-12, 2015. Writing for the Holidays. Annie Cicale. December 6-12, John C. Campbell Folk School, Brasstown, NC.
From the fundamentals of hand lettering to design, this class will give you options for using your letters in many ways. Begin with the basics of using a broad-edged pen and progress to using lettering on quality paper to make gifts, ornaments or greeting cards. You can also use your new skills to make a small keepsake book. Experienced students will welcome a review of the basics and will then work on a more complex project. All levels welcome. The residential folk school in western North Carolina, offers week-long and weekend classes throughout the year in many craft areas, from cooking to blacksmithing, from quilting to woodturning, as well as many book arts. Register for classes at www.FolkSchool.org. Or for questions, contact the folk school at 800-FOLK-SCH.
